Homeopathy

What is it?

Homeopathy is a well-evidenced, natural form of complementary medicine, which encourages the body to heal itself. It has been practised worldwide for over 200 years to help to treat a wide range of health conditions and is the second largest system of medicine in the world today, as recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO). In the UK, homeopathy is used by around 6 million people.

Homeopathy aims to get to the underlying reasons for health issues and stimulates the body's own healing capacity. It is a health system that looks at the whole person – taking into account an individual’s unique physical, emotional and mental symptoms – in order to find an appropriate remedy. Homeopathic remedies use tiny doses of a substance that matches and resonates with the individual’s state and stimulates a healing response.

Homeopathy can help with minor ailments, such as stomach upsets or coughs, but really comes into its own with long-term problems, including those which have failed to respond to conventional medicine, such as arthritis, asthma, migraine, colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, anxieties, issues of self-confidence and burn out.

It is completely safe for anyone to use; for example, babies respond really well to homeopathy. It can be used without fear of side effects and can be taken alongside conventional medications.

Homeopathic remedies are made from natural sources, such as minerals and plants. The remedies are designed to stimulate the individual’s own healing response, in a gentle but effective way. They are prepared under licence from specialist pharmacies, under strict controls. They are usually taken as a tablet, but may also be prescribed as liquids, powders or creams.

Homeopaths are regulated by their relevant professional body; the main ones being the Society of Homeopaths, and the Alliance of Registered Homeopaths. You can find information on research into homeopathy and evidence for its effectiveness at the Homeopathic Research Institute.

Who is it suitable for?

Homeopathy is safe and effective for anyone. It can be used for all ages, including during pregnancy, and from birth onwards. Men, women and children are all welcome at the clinic.

Where can it help?

Homeopathy can really help in all sorts of acute and first aid situations, such as injuries, post-surgery recovery, colds and flu. However, homeopathic treatment can offer much deeper support with long-term problems, such as digestive disorders, hormonal issues, fertility, sleep problems, fibromyalgia, low mood and stress

What to expect

  • At the first consultation, your homeopath will want to hear all about your health – both your immediate reason that led you to seek help, and any wider health issues (physical, mental or emotional). This can be a very free-ranging conversation, giving you the time to discuss and explore what may seem like disconnected health concerns. Your homeopath will also be interested in you as a person, not just your immediate symptoms, in order to find a remedy that will resonate best with you and stimulate your body’s healing response.

  • Your homeopath will provide a remedy, or remedies, with clear instructions on how to take them. A follow-up appointment - to review progress, and continue treatment – would usually be around 4 to 6 weeks later.
